Dr.Sukumar Azhikode passes away,പകരം വെക്കാനില്ലാത്ത മഹല്‍ പ്രതിഭ

Thrissur: Noted Malayalam critic, writer and orator Sukumar Azhikode (85) passed away at the Amala Hospital here at 6.33 am Tuesday.

After being detected with bone cancer, he was admitted to hospital Dec 7, 2011. His condition had deteriorated in the past few days.

In 1986, he retired as pro-vice chancellor of Calicut University. The 85-year-old bachelor has won 12 awards, including the Sahitya Akademi award.

One of the towering figures of Kerala's cultural scene, Azhikode is known for his bold interventions in the cultural as well as literary, social milieu of Kerala. His hard criticism was penetrating. He was a thinker, orator, teacher social-political critic and journalist all rolled into one.

He was a Gandhian and started off as a Congress man but later leaned towards the Left. The Congress leaders were were at the receiving end of his criticism.

Speaking to Manorama News TV channel about his change of mind he had said: Please do not ask me why I am leaning towards the Left, but why I cannot get closer to the Congress.

Along with late M.N. Vijayan, Azhikode was the one of the most gifted orators the state has ever seen. Even after he was 80 years of age he used to speak at four or five pulpits.

As a writer he was a versatile. His literary criticism was penetrating and his social criticim too was hard hitting.

One of the most famous of his books was 'Tathvamasi'.
